Competitions at The Inverness Highland Games

At the heart of The Inverness Highland Games are its traditional competitions, a full day of strength, skill, music and movement that brings the arena alive. From powerful Heavy Events to elegant Highland Dancing, stirring piping and fast-paced track and field, there is something to captivate every visitor.

Below you’ll find more detail on each of the four main competition categories that make up the Games.

1. Heavies

The Heavy Events are among the most iconic and dramatic spectacles of The Inverness Highland Games. These events test raw power, technique and control, as competitors take on traditional challenges that have been part of Highland culture for generations.

Events typically include:

Caber Tossing

Hammer Throw

Weight for Distance

Weight Over the Bar

A highlight of the day is the Inverness Stonemason’s Stone Challenge, where competitors attempt to lift a 252lb stone cleanly over a bar suspended five feet in the air — a feat achieved by only a handful of athletes to date.

The Heavies always draw big crowds and deliver some of the loudest cheers of the day.
